The Fingal Rovers Hurling Team
The Fingal Rovers hurling team was started in Rolestown around 1952. The people mainly responsible for setting up this club were Owen and Tommie Butler. The meetings were held in Butlers. The hurleys were made in Butler's yard in Dublin. The team travelled to matches in Butler's van.
At that time the Fingal Board were trying to foster hurling in Fingal and most clubs set up a hurling team. Fingal Rovers were the only team that survived for a number of years. The players were mostly Wild Geese players as Fingal Ravens had broken up some years previously.
They were beaten by Portrane in the Final of the Fingal League in Swords. They beat Porton Docks in the fine of the Special Competition at Islandbridge. Porton Docks even brought up big Jim Wallace from Wexford for the match. This was roughly the team that beat Porton Docks:
